Consultation Session on Central Asia Economic Cooperation

(Held during the 35th Annual Meeting of the ADB Board of Governors)

A consultation session on Central Asia economic cooperation was held during the 35th Annual Meeting of ADB Governors in Shanghai, PRC. Participants included full members of ADB’s Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program, countries neighboring Central Asia, and representatives from ADB’s development partners. This was the first occasion for Afghanistan and the Russian Federation to attend an ADB-organized activity on Central Asia economic cooperation.

ADB’s Annual Meeting offers a good opportunity for joint consultation with high-level government officials on economic cooperation in Central Asia. The first such consultation session was held during last year’s Annual Meeting in Honolulu. Apart from providing a forum for deliberating specific issues, this consultation contributes to enhancing mutual trust and understanding, which are the foundations for regional economic cooperation.

Objectives

This high-level consultation session kept the momentum generated during the Ministerial Conference held recently in Manila toward

  • making concrete progress through investment projects and policy improvements, and
  • expanding the partnership with participating and neighboring countries as well as with other international financial institutions.

Target Participants

  • Delegates to ADB’s Annual Meeting from the participating countries in the CAREC Program, namely, Azerbaijan, the People’s Republic of China, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan
  • Delegates to ADB’s Annual Meeting from Central Asia’s neighboring countries, namely, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, and Turkey
