Developing a Disaster Risk Transfer Facility in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Region

The regional knowledge and support technical assistance will support the development of comprehensive regional disaster risk financing solutions to assist the CAREC countries in reducing their physical and financial vulnerability to natural hazards.

Regional Cooperation on Increasing Cross-Border Energy Trading within the Central Asian Power System – Expansion of Membership in Central Asian Power System (Subproject 3)

The technical assistance (TA) will have the following outcome: regional energy trade and cooperation enhanced. The identified infrastructure projects, which are necessary for connection of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and other potential new electricity markets to Central Asian Power System (CAPS), will be submitted for endorsement of the CAPS governments at Central Asia United Power System Council Meeting.

The regional knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) aims to further enhance capacity of customs agencies and the CAREC Customs Cooperation Committee (CCC) to better respond to the evolving trade environment and increasing client demand for better services.

Better Customs for Better Client Services in Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Countries

CAREC Corridors 1 and 6 Connector Road (Aktobe–Kandyagash) Reconstruction Project

The proposed project will (i) reconstruct the 89-kilometer highway connecting Aktobe and Kandyagash and (ii) strengthen the institutional capacity of KazAvtoZhol. The project is aligned with the following impact: More jobs created and Kazakhstan integrated into the regional and global economic system (Kazakhstan 2050 Strategy).

Preparing the Batumi–Sarpi Bypass Project

The Government of Georgia is investing substantial amounts in the infrastructure needed to take advantage of its location, with emphasis on the country's backbone for transit trade comprised of the East–West and North–South transport corridors.

Partnership with the Private Sector for Sustainable Trade Facilitation Results in the CAREC Program

The project aims to expand trade among CAREC countries and with global markets via CAREC corridors, and strengthen trade-related linkages between public and private sector.

Preparing Railway Modernization Projects

The Government of Uzbekistan and O'zbekiston Temir Yo'llari (UTY) have requested technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to prepare two projects to further modernize railways in Uzbekistan: (i) CAREC Corridor 2 (Pap Namangan Andijan) Railway Electrification Project, Additional Financing, and (ii) CAREC Corridor 2 (Bukhara Miskin Urgench Khiva) Railway Electrification Project.

Regional Improvement of Border Services Project, Additional Financing

The newly approved additional financing for the ongoing Regional Improvement of Border Services Project will further upgrade border crossing points in Bichigt, bordering the PRC in the east; and Borshoo, which borders the Russian Federation in the west.

Preparing Sustainable Energy Projects in Central Asia

The regional transaction TA facility will provide project preparation support to a series of ensuing projects in Central Asia: (i) Power Distribution Enhancement, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects in the Kyrgyz Republic; and (ii) Power Sector Development Program in the Republic of Tajikistan.

Sustainable Tourism Development in the CAREC Region

The proposed regional knowledge and support technical assistance will support the development of a comprehensive framework to promote tourism development and cooperation in the CAREC region, including through the formulation of a CAREC tourism strategy leading to 2030 and an integrated investment action plan with concrete projects to be implemented over the strategy period.

Rural Electrification Project

The Tajikistan Rural Electrification Project will finance the construction of electricity generation and distribution infrastructure to provide off-grid solutions or connect to the central grid vulnerable communities in Tajikistan’s eastern Gorno–Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) and southern Khatlon region.

CAREC: Knowledge Sharing and Services in Transport and Transport Facilitation (Phase 2)

The knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) will support the implementation of the CAREC Transport Strategy Plans, which will continue to promote regional cooperation through competitive and sustainable transport corridors.

Preparing the East-West Highway (Shorapani-Argveta Section) Improvement

The Government of Georgia, through the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, is planning capacity expansion of the current two-lane mountainous section of the East-West Highway (Highway E60) between Chumateleti and Argveta in central Georgia, a distance of about 53 kilometers, through mountainous terrain

North–South Corridor (Kvesheti–Kobi) Road Project

The Government of Georgia is making substantial investments in infrastructure intended to take advantage of its location and tourism attractions, and is emphasizing the country's transit trade through development of the East–West and North–South transport corridors.

Railway Efficiency Improvement Project

The project aims to improve the efficiency of Uzbekistan's railway operations, combining investments where it faces operational bottlenecks (e.g., electric locomotives), and strategic support to improve business practices.

Regional Road Development and Maintenance Project, Additional Financing

The additional financing for the Regional Road Development and Maintenance Project will rehabilitate the 118-kilometer (km) Darkhan–Altanbulag and 58-km Khuiten Valley–Arvaikheer road sections, while further enhancing the condition of the 204-km Ulaanbaatar–Darkhan road section.

Uch-Kurgan Hydropower Plant Modernization Project

The proposed project will replace ageing electrical and mechanical equipment for power generation and transmission at the Uch-Kurgan hydropower plant (HPP) in the Naryn River cascade, and undertake silt and sedimentation removal which hinders the proper operation of hydromechanical equipment of the HPP.

Strengthening Gender-Inclusive Growth in Central and West Asia, Additional Financing

The objective of the technical assistance is to strengthen capacity of Central and West Asia developing member countries to mainstream gender in ADB-funded projects.
