Access to Electricity with New Off-Grid Solar Technology in Central Asia

The technical assistance aims to demonstrate the technical and financial viability of this new technology combination in the CAREC region, and enable the off-grid community to move from basic lighting to a range of basic battery-operated appliances using larger solar panels and long-life lithium-ion batteries.

Toktogul Rehabilitation Phase 3 Project

The proposed phase 3 project aims to, among others, complete the rehabilitation of the Toktogul hydroelectric power plant (HPP) by replacing the two remaining turbine-generator units and refurbishing the civil structures of Toktogul dam.

Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) Natural Gas Pipeline Project

The project will enhance energy trading between Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

Energy Supply Improvement Investment Program, Tranche 1

The subprojects proposed for financing are: (i) 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Sheberghan to Dashte Alwan, (ii) 220-kV transmission line from Andkhoy to Sheberghan, (iii) project preparation facility for future energy projects and provision of analytical consulting services, and (iv) program supervision and implementation consultancy.

Preparing MFF Power Distribution Enhancement Investment Program

The proposed Power Distribution Enhancement Investment Program aims to improve efficiency of the power distribution subsector in Azerbaijan through rehabilitation and expansion of an aged power distribution network.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Sustainable Water Management in Turkmenistan

The project objectives are to provide for sufficient and environmentally sustainable water supply to support and enhance social conditions and economic livelihood of the population of Turkmenistan; reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with water management; prevent and remediate salinization of lands.

Oshelectro Rehabilitation Project

The program aims to rehabilitate and modernize low and medium voltage networks, including installation of number of smart meters in Osh and Batken regions in the south of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Renewable Energy Development

The technical assistance aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Afghanistan by developing a roadmap, developing hybrid wind/solar/diesel renewable energy projects, and increasing the necessary institutional capacity in the country.

Toktogul Rehabilitation Phase 2 Project

The project will help upgrade the Kyrgyz Republic's largest power plant, Toktogul, which produces 40% of the country's electricity supply and regulates power frequency for Central Asia.

Study for a Power Sector Financing Roadmap within CAREC

The CAREC Power Sector Financing Roadmap, to be prepared under the technical assistance, will assess the capacity and willingness of CAREC countries to finance power infrastructure development from their own resources, and examine other potential sources of financing, for both national and cross-border projects.

Electricity Supply Accountability and Reliability Improvement Project

The objective of the proposed Electricity Supply Accountability and Reliability Improvement project is to improve the reliability of the electricity supply in the capital city Bishkek, as well as the Chui and Talas regions—an area served by the state-owned power distribution company Severelectro JSC—and to strengthen the governance of Severlectro’s operations.

Europe and the CIS Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative

The regional initiative covers Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan as CAREC countries. The program is to support countries and provide policy and advisory technical assistance as well as research and development assistance.

Energy Sector Development Investment Program, Tranche 5

The project will build a 500-kilovolt (kV)/220-kV substation at Dashte Alwan, which will connect to a 500-kV transmission line crossing the Hindukush mountains via the Salang Pass route. This will add 1,000 megawatts to the system and allow power imports from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Golovnaya 240-Megawatt Hydropower Plant Rehabilitation Project

The project will refurbish electric and mechanical equipment for power generation and transmission at the Golovnaya Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan, which will raise generation capacity to 252 megawatts (MW) from 240 MW.

North–South Power Transmission Enhancement Project (formerly Power Distribution Project)

The project will construct a 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line about 225 kilometers (km) long across the Hindukush mountain range between the northern town of Dashte Alwan and Kabul, at the southern end. It will include a new 500-kV / 220-kV substation to connect to the grid in Kabul, Afghanistan's capital.

Energy Development 2014–2023

The project preparatory technical assistance (PPTA) will conduct due diligence for an ensuing ADB project aimed to increase electricity supply and access to electricity and increase gas supply for electricity production and industrial uses.

Addendum to the Afghanistan Power Sector Master Plan

The technical assistance supported Afghanistan in preparing its Power Sector Master Plan.

Toktogul Rehabilitation Project Phase 2

The technical assistance will conduct detailed due diligence for both Phases 2 and 3 of the Toktogul hydroelectric power plant (HPP) Rehabilitation Project.

Energy Efficiency Project

The project consists of two components: investment and technical assistance. The first part will finance eligible subprojects to support a reduction in energy use of public buildings such as schools, kindergartens, clinics/hospitals, and street lighting. The second part concerns technical assistance to help ensure effective project implementation.

Energy Sector Dialogue
