Mitigation of Transboundary Air Pollution from Coal-Fired Power Plants in Northeast Asia

During the 10th North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC) Senior Officials Meeting held in Japan in November 2004, subregional partners requested ADB’s support for mitigation of transboundary air pollution from coal-fired power plants, through a regional technical assistance (TA) project.

The technical assistance aims to develop a CAREC transport sector strategy that will guide CAREC cooperation activities to develop an efficient regional transport network to optimally link the region internally and with the rest of the world.

North–South Corridor Project

The project will upgrade the north-south corridor: 140.3 kilometers of the Mazar-e-Sharif-Dara-i-Suf road and 98.9 km of the Bamian-Yakawlang road. It will also install cross-border facilities at Hairatan and Spin Boldak, and include an HIV/AIDS prevention and anti-human trafficking drive.

Rehabilitation of Bamian–Yakawlang Road

The project component of the North–South Corridor Project involves rehabilitation of the 98.9-kilometer Bamian–Yakawlang road to an asphalt-paved standard that will allow smooth passage of heavy vehicles with two traffic lanes.

Support Preparations for CAREC Business Development Forum

The intended impact of the regional technical assistance (RETA) was improved investment, trade, and transport conditions in the CAREC region resulting from the establishment of an effective forum for private sector feedback and input into CAREC.

Road Rehabilitation and Capacity Building Cluster

The Government of Afghanistan requested the Asian Development Bank (to provide technical assistanceto develop road rehabilitation projects for national highways and strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Transport.

The technical assistance will help enhance regional cooperation and sustainable socioeconomic development in CAREC countries by rehabilitating the regional transport corridor in Tajikistan.

The technical assistance (TA) will assist the Government of Mongolia to prepare a western regional road development project suitable for Asian Development Bank financing by undertaking feasibility study and preliminary design.

Remittances and Poverty in Central Asia and South Caucasus

The technical assistance aims to have more efficient regional and national road networks.

Second Highway Project

The project will help reduce road transport costs and improve access, transit, and road safety within East–West and North–South corridors by upgrading some sections of the Alat–Masalli road of the Baku–Iran highway (M3) and rehabilitating the Baku–Shamakhi road (M4).

Subregional Economic Cooperation in South and Central Asia, Phase 2

The regional technical assistance (RETA) supported a series of sector meetings and Senior Official Meetings focused on development of CAREC's transport and trade strategies and action plans.

Trade and Human Development in Mongolia

The project will help Mongolia overcome economic constraints and vulnerabilities as a result of being landlocked. It will build capacity of national leaders in trade negotiations, and in strengthening the grouping of landlocked countries.

Facilitation of Transport Cooperation among CAREC Countries, Phase I

The regional technical assistance (RETA) facilitates transport cooperation among CAREC countries to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic development in the region through the Transport Sector Coordinating Committee.
