Central Asia Customs Cooperation Meeting

The Central Asia Customs Cooperation Meeting was attended by participants from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and from Azerbaijan and Mongolia as observers.

The meeting had a forum for the participating countries to discuss and exchange experiences in customs modernization in the context of regional economic cooperation. In particular, it presented an opportunity to discuss the role of enhanced customs cooperation in achieving improvements in trade facilitation.

Objectives

The twofold objectives of the meeting were to

  • finalize ADB’s sector study, with a focus on identifying priority areas for cooperation; and
  • discuss the proposal for a cooperation mechanism.

Expected Outputs

The outputs were a summary of discussions that contained recommendations on priority areas for future cooperation among customs, and the establishment of a cooperation mechanism.

Target Participants

  • Two senior customs officials from each of the governments of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the People’s Republic of China
  • Observers from Azerbaijan and Mongolia
  • Senior officials of ADB
