The Kyrgyz Republic, a landlocked country located in the heart of Central Asia, depends on road transport to connect people, markets, and services. Through the CAREC Program, investments in transport infrastructure are enhancing regional connectivity and opening up new economic opportunities. 

One of the program’s key projects is the CAREC Corridor 3 (Bishkek – Osh Road) Improvement Project, Phase 4. Asian Development Bank and the Eurasian Development Bank have provided a $160 million loan and grant. This project upgraded critical sections of the Bishkek–Osh Road, one of the country’s most important transport links and part of a major regional trade corridor. 

Besides reconstructing and rehabilitating about 52.5 km of crucial road sections between Bishkek and Osh, the project also involves the installation of various road safety features such as signs, markings lights, bus stops, footpaths, and crash barriers. Beyond the main works, the project also strengthened institutional capacity through (a) 68.5 km performance-based maintenance pilot contract, covering the section from Kara-Balta (Km 61) to Km 129.5; (b) road safety campaign; (c) road safety audit for all phases (design, construction, and pre-opening); and (d) study on structural assessment.
