Accessing reliable energy is about more than keeping the lights on. It powers homes, supports businesses, connects communities, and creates opportunities for growth. For a country as vast as Turkmenistan, moving power efficiently across long distances is vital for national progress and regional collaboration. 

As Turkmenistan strengthens its role as a key energy supplier in Central Asia, the need for a modern, interconnected power network has become increasingly important. The country needs a reliable and efficient grid to meet rising domestic demand, expand electricity exports, and connect people nationwide. 

The National Power Grid Strengthening Project was a major step toward that goal. Supported by $500 million in Asian Development Bank financing and completed in 2025, the project helped establish a unified national transmission network covering a large part of the country. 

Across Turkmenistan, workers built about 1,400 kilometers of transmission lines, linking regions through 110-, 220-, and 500-kilovolt networks. Teams built or upgraded 11 substations, creating a stronger grid capable of delivering electricity more efficiently. 

The upgrade’s benefits stretch across the country. Better network reliability has cut transmission losses and power outages, providing a steady electricity supply for homes, businesses, and public services. At the same time, the stronger grid has boosted Turkmenistan’s capability to exchange power with its neighbors, increasing electricity exports to Afghanistan. In 2023, these electricity exports reached nearly 10 terawatt-hours. 

The project focused on strengthening the institutions behind the infrastructure. Through technical assistance and training, Turkmenenergo improved its project and financial management while adopting international standards for planning, investment evaluation, and safeguards. 

As the first project in Turkmenistan’s power sector backed by an international development institution, the National Power Grid Strengthening Project represents more than an investment in energy infrastructure. It is an investment in stronger connections, between regions,between countries, and between people and opportunities. By bringing the national grid together, the project is helping power a more connected and resilient future for Turkmenistan and the wider region.
