Feasibility Study of Borovoe–Petropavlovsk Road Rehabilitation Project in Kazakhstan

The technical assistance assisted the Government of Kazakhstan in preparing a proposal to improve the road from Borovoe to Petropavlovsk. It supplements and reviews the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB)-financed feasibility study of the Borovoe-Petropavlovsk Road Rehabilitation Project.

Reassessment of the Regional Transport Sector Strategy

This technical assistance updates the existing regional transport sector study of the Asian Development Bank. Initial work includes discussion of issues and collection of information during a field trip to Kazakstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and presentation of an initial outline strategy to the governments at a regional transport meeting.

Atyrau Airport Project

The project will improve efficiency and commercialization of operations at Atyrau Airport, and will implement changes in the legal and regulatory environment of air transport in Kazakhstan.

Locomotive Repowering Project

The project involves re-powering of diesel–electric locomotives, including installation of new diesel engines, main alternators, and cooler groups.

Institutional Support in the Transport Sector

The TA was attached to the Third Road Rehabilitation Project, which included rehabilitation of 120 kilometers of national highway from Bishkek to Osh, as well as support for regulatory reform in the road sector.

Third Road Rehabilitation Project

The project will help reduce poverty and promote sustainable economic growth by reducing the cost of road transport and improving access to markets in the Bishkek–Osh corridor.

TSA Air Navigation Systems

The project will modernize Tajikistan's ageing air navigation equipment and support the restructuring of the aviation sector.

Regional Economic Cooperation in Central Asia (Phase 2, Year 3)

Phase II, Year Three was intended to also address other regional concerns such as trade facilitation and broad water/energy/environment issues, as well as the establishment of an institutionalized mechanism for the CAREC Program.

Highway Project

The project will promote trade and economic growth by improving access and lowering transport costs for goods and passenger traffic moving along the East-West Highway.

Transport Development Project

The project will improve accessibility to remote central and western regions of Mongolia by providing basic road access, improving utilization of the railway system, reducing road accidents, and improving air quality.

Preparing the Second Road Rehabilitation Project

The technical assistance helps the government prepare a feasibility study and preliminary design to rehabilitate selected sections of the Dushanbe-Darband road and selected rural roads. This rehabilitation project is part of Tajikistan's Second Road Rehabilitation Project.

Shagon–Zigar Road Rehabilitation Project

Shagon-Zigar Road lies on the north western bank of the Pyenj River, which forms the southern border of Tajikistan with Afghanistan. The section forms an integral link in the Khulyab - Kalaykhumb Highways.

Additional Financing for Customs Modernization and Trade Facilitation Project

The project development objective is to: provide Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (IRA) emergency assistance to start establishing a more efficient customs and transit regime.

Almaty–Bishkek Economic Corridor Regional Improvement of Border Services Project Readiness

The regional knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) will continue supporting the implementation of a pilot cross-border economic corridor around Almaty and Bishkek under the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) program. The governments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic are implementing an economic corridor between Almaty, Bishkek, and the surrounding regions since 2014. The proposed TA will support the work of the ABEC Subcommittee in designing new regional projects, develop a new mechanism for selecting projects, and develop a framework for a regional development fund.
