Azerbaijan’s Accession to the World Trade Organization: Stakeholders’ Seminar

ADB discussed with government stakeholders the outcome of the ex-ante assessment of Azerbaijan’s accession to the World Trade Organization. In her opening remarks, Deputy Head Gulchin Alasgarova of the Department for Trade Policy and WTO Issues of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy, emphasized that the results of the multi-scenario ex-ante assessment and stakeholders’ consultations will facilitate broader understanding and awareness of Azerbaijan’s accession to the WTO. AZRM Country Director Candice McDeigan underscored that increased market access—including through WTO membership—is critical to Azerbaijan’s economic diversification and its quest to integrate further into the global economy. ADB in partnership with the WTO Secretariat and other development partners expressed commitment to support Azerbaijan including through dialogue and experience-sharing among acceding CAREC countries (Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan) and newer members of the WTO.

ADB consultant Ben Shepherd discussed the economic impacts of accession, risks to key sectors, and opportunities for government’s consideration.
